Global Design Director for Robert Bird Group with nearly 30 years’ experience, Mark is a widely experienced chartered structural engineer with a background in construction, lead consultancy and a particular interest in design-led engineering, concept design and digital design. Mark started his career as a Graduate at Ove Arup before spending seven years at Arup Associates as part of the multidiscipline design team working on many landmark projects such as Hong Kong Super Terminal One, Manchester Airport Terminal 3, City of Manchester Stadium, Battersea PowerStation and Plantation Place. Mark moved on to Ramboll/Whibybird as head of the Residential sector before becoming Global Sports Leader for Ramboll. At Ramboll Mark lead a wide variety of project teams ranging from the major residential developments of Greenwich Millennium Village, Riverlight and Fitzroy Place London to stadium projects of Liverpool Football Club, Al Rayyan World Cup Stadium in Qatar and everything in between from listed building refurbishment, schools, higher education, hotels, masterplans and data centres. Mark then moved on to become Global Design Director for Robert Bird Group, taking on major engineering and place making challenges such as 21 Moorfields - a 16 storey 55m clear span structure over Moorgate Station, and most recently he leads the structural and civil engineering for Elizabeth House – a 108m long Span 30 storey 130,000 square meter office development directly over Waterloo Tube Station in London, dubbed London’s most challenging site. In the course of his career, Mark has developed expertise in a number of specialist areas such as non-conventional reinforced concrete, lightweight steel and long span structures, oversite station developments, deep basements, volumetric and modular construction. He is a valuable contributor to the development of difficult urban sites and masterplanning. Mark deliberately moves between sectors and geographic locations to capture and develop ideas across sectors and locations. Mark has a passion for digital design and sees the application of technology to both help the creative process and facilitate the delivery and assurance of projects as a long overdue in the construction industry and ultimately will transform and modernise the industry.
